LONDON MARKETS. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram dated September 1, from the High Commissioner for Now Zealand, London: — TALLOW. Quiet demand at auction and no chango in prices. EGGS. Demand slow and prices lower. Present quotations are: —English, 17s 6d to 22s per long 100; Dutch, French, 15s to 17s 6d; Danish, Bolgian, 14s 6d to 16s 6d; Polish, Lithuanian, Russian, 13s 6d. HEMP. Manila market dull during this week, and at the closo sellers quoto “J” grado £37 for August-Octobcr ' and Septembcr"November shipments. Sisal market firm. Sales made of No. 1 at £35 10s to £35 and No. 2 at £34 5s to £34 15s in any position until tho end of tho year. Now Zealand market remains firm with scarcity of offers. Demand is moderate in all positions. Nominal closing values samo as last quotations. WOOL. Bradford: Inquiry for both wool and tops is a little more general, but actual business still very restricted. Quotations for tops aro somowhat easier. 64’s (morino), warp, 4s 4d per lb; average 4s 3d; 56’s (super half-bred), 3s lid; 50’s, prepared, 2s 7d; 40’s, prepared, 2s Oid. INDIAN INDUSTRY. NEED OF PROTECTIVE DUTY.

Tho Government of India has _ accepted tho recommendation of tho Tariff Board that tho Indian match industry should bo protected by maintaining and converting I into a protective duty tho presont rovonue j duty of one rupco eight annas per gross. The Government finds that a protective duty is necessitated by the existence of an international combine with largo financial resources controlling tho manufacture and sale of matches in a largo part of tho world. The adoption by tho Swedish Match Company of a policy of supplying the Indian market with matches made in India would require a reconsideration of tho duty. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. SYDNEY, Sept. 3. _ At tho wool sales, under keen competition. the market was firm at tho best point of last wook’s sales. Tho irregularity recently reported is less pronounced. Good clearances were effected. Greasy Merino fleece sold to 24£d per lb. PRICES FOR RAW MATERIALS. (Australian Press Association.) LONDON, Sept. 2. Three companies are operating, and at tho Thames Valley Co-operative Company have slaughtered over 5000 calves, nominally fivo days old, since tho season opened in July. HEREFORDS FOR APIA. SHIPMENT NEXT SATURDAY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 3. When five of nine purebred Herefords had been shipped on the Maui Pomare for Apia it was ascertained that there was not room for the other four. The shippers unloaded the five and all were sent to Westfield, awaiting shipment by the Tofua next Saturday. STOCK MARKET. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report haying a small entry of sheep, cattle and pigs at their Bulls sale on Monday. Quotations: Small b.f. hoggets, 25s Id; fair wether hoggets, 28s lOd; dairy heifers, £7, £7 ss, £7 7s 6d, £8 ss; wcaner pigs, 22b, 235, 24d; slips, 295; stores, 323.
WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE. YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. At tho afternoon call yestorday a sale of 4i per cent. Government bonds at £99 5s woro made on the Wellington Stock Exchange, and the sales reported wore Hud-dart-Parker, ordinary, at 48s lOd and Sharland and Co., ordinary (two parcels), at 20s. It was noticeable that sellers wore moro numerous, while thero was an apparent easing in the buying orders. Tho 4j per cent. Government bonds were in demand at £99 ss, and the 5i per cents at £lOl 2s 6d. Wellington Harbour Board 5£ per conts. (1940) were wanted at £9B, Wanganui City 5 3 per cents. (1945) at £IOO, and N.Z. Breweries’ stock and bonds at 345. ... Bank shares were quiet with buyers of Commercial Bank of Australia (preference) at £7, and Bank of New South Wales at £SO, ex dividend. Sellers wanted Bank of Australasia at £ls Is, Commercial Bank of Australia ordinary at 30s lOd, English, Scottish and Australian Bank at £8 15, National Bank of Australasia, £5 paid, at £9 9s, Bank of New Zealand at 625, and Union Bank (Melbourne register) at £ls 7s. Except for bids of 8s 9d for N.Z. Guarantee Corporation, ordinary, and 21s for preference, thoro was nothing doing in tho financial group. Gas shares were also very dull, only Gisborno Gas being in demand at 9s 6d. Thero wero no buyers of insurance or meat shares. Shipping shares wero steady, with buyers of Huddart-Parker at 48s 6d, Union Steam at 20s 3d, and P. and O. deferred stocks at £236. Wellington Woollen were firm, tho ordinary at £b 8s and tho preference at £6 9s. Timber shares were steady, National Timber being wanted at 7s 6d and LeylandO’Brion Timber at 335. New Zealand Breweries were firm at 47s Id, and Staples and Co. at 37s 7d. Australian Glass ahd Hume Pipe (Australia) wero quoted for tho first time fpr many months, 32s 6d being bid for tho former and 17s 6d for tho latter. Thero wero buyers of British Tobacco at 435, Colonial Sugar at £6l, Dominion Investments at 22s 6d, Electrolytic Zinc, preference, at 345, N.Z.
