CHICAGO’S MAYOR.

ANTIPATHY TO BRITAIN.

(Australian Press Association.) NEW YORK, Aug. 23. A Chicago message states that tho Mayor, Mr Thompson, apparently has won his battle aaginst British influence. Mr W. J. Bogan, the new superintendent of schools, has eliminated all of the six histones which Mr Thompson attacked during the trial of tho former superintendent (Mr MoAndrew) from the school study hero, on tho ground that the books are pro-British. The single history, which remains available to the schools is Gordy’s “History of the United States,” and that is retained with tlie request that tlie picture entitled “Resplendent Redcoats’ he deleted and replaced by a portrait of Washington.
