HOCKEY

(Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Aug. 23

A men’s representative team journeyed to Dannevirke yesterday to play the home representatives in a challenge match for th Winter Shield. The visitors were unable to take tho field in their full strength, but played a great game, they eventually going down to the strong combination opposing them by two goals to nil.

DEER HEADS

Two fino samples of door heads from tho Apiti district aro at present held by Mr A. H. Marshall, secretary of the local branch of tho Acclimatisation Society. Tho heads ,which were secured at Table Flat by Mr Brooking, are. a 12 and eight points respectively and had been excellently mounted by a Palmerston North firm. They were shot this season, and Mr Marshall reports that similar heads are fairly plentiful in tho samo locality just now.

GUN CLUB,

The Oroua Gun Club proposed holding a clay bird shoot on tho racecourse yesterday, but owing to being busy with lambing and other seasonal work none of the country members could attend. An informal shoot was staged by the few town members present, but no records were kept.

BILLIARDS,

A team of three billiardists from the Foxton Fire Brigade visited the local fire station on Tuesday night and played a match for the Coley Shield. This tropliv was presented by Mr G. Coley, of Foxton, some years ago for competition among the Foxton, Levin, Palmerston North and Feilding fire brigades. Feilding won the shield at the initial game and has held it ever since.

In Tuesday night’s match S. Gaskin defeated McArtney 101 —41; A. Walls defeated P. Fisher 112 —91; Des Jardines beat O. Scott 101 —65. Although the Foxton men won two out of the three games the local players’ aggrogate was 257 to 254, Feilding thus retaining the shield.

PERSONAL.

Mr F. Gledhill, district manager, Public Trust Office, Feilding, is at Swsent on annual leave. Mr H. von turmer. of Palmerston North is acting as local manager during Mr Gledliill’s absence.

Miss E. M. Wilson has been appointed as ail assistant teacher at Manchester Street school and will take up her duties after the term holidays.

POLICE COURT,

Appearing befor© Messrs Jas Pennev and V. E. Smith, J.P.’s, at a special sitting of the Police Court this morning, Timothy Driscoll, a second offending inebriate, was convicted and discharged and ordered to leave the town immediately.- Sergeant Cahill stated that accused weiit from town to town trying to get help from local relief associations. Ho had got 10s worth of goods from the secretary of tho local associatin, but ho was really not deserving of help owing to his drinking habits. Tho Bench decided, however, to give accused another chance. Pleading guilty to charges of (1) being found drunk in a public place and (2) with being an idle and disorderly person, Matthew Millard was also convicted and ordered to leave the town at once. Tho sergeant stated that Millard was a returned soldier who was suffering from shell shock and the effects of two gunshot wounds. The unfortunate man was also dumb, but his other faculties wero moro or less normal. . The Bench stated that it was difficult to deal with an offender of this nature and thou girt that he ought to bo in the hands of some charitable institution. They wero disposed to bo lenient with him.
