MILITARY TRAINING.

POSITION OF APPRENTICES.

WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. “That this conference believes that during the years of compulsory trade classes as provided under the Apprentices Act,‘all boys should be free from compulsory military training during evenings.” 1 This remit was moved by Mr W. M. Luxford (Wanganui)- at tho Technical Education Associations’ Conference yesterday. Mr Luxford said they might even agree that the penalties provided for non-attendance at drill might be applied to non-attendance at compulsory trade classes. They all recognised the necessity for military drill. (Voices: “No.”) Mr W. F. Durward: We all ought to recognise it. Mr Luxford: Not from a war point of view, but from the point of view of the discipline and training they get in the military camps, which helps them to become better citizens, and they understand more what the meaning of discipline is. I*t is from the physical exercise point of view that the advisory committee looks at it. He thought it could be arranged for these boys to spend an extra time in camp instead of attending drills at night when they were wanted to attend classes.

It was stated that the Defence Department had made provision to meet the case.

It was decided to reaffirm the principle adopted last year.
