SAVAGE DOGS.
OVER 200 SHEEP KILLED,
LOSS OF £3OO.
SYDNEY, Aug. 6,
A mob of 600 full-woolled Merino wethers en route to Gilmore from Erongilly were savagely attacked by dogs. Over 200 were found dead and others have been bitten and shockingly mutilated. The sheep destroyed were worth over £3OO.
Whilst skinning some of the carcases tho drovers noticed tho dogs sneaking up to the rest of the mob. These prowlers were followed to a settler’s place, and after identification were destroyed. Only recently other sheep were killed and maimed in the same reserve.
It is strange, but none the less true, that when the domestic dog acquires the killing instinct, ho is as bad, if not wroso than the, dingo. In such cases the dogs seem to be prompted by one instinct only—a savage determination to kill and maim. These killings areusually tho work of dogs impelled by the primitive instinct of the chase and not by hunger. As a rule they do not touch the flesh of their victims, but carry out the slaughter with fiendish energy and thoroughness. And having, completed the job they sneak away from the sceno of their debauchery and comport themselves like prize poodles at home till the urge for another killing is upon them. In most instances the killers work in pairs.
