UNITED PARTY.
INVITATION TO SIR JOSEPH WARD.
SECTION OPPOSED TO LEADERSHIP.
(Australian Press Association.) Received August 22, 10.15 a.m. VANCOUVER, Aug. 21. In air interview to-day Sir Joseph War stated that the invitation from the United Party in New Zealand to become its leader was contained in a cable message he received before he reached Winnipeg. Obviously, Sir Joseph added, it would not bj fitting to accept yet. Upon arrival in New Zealand ho would be met by fifty candidates and would then give ins answer, and of this intention he had already informed them by cable.
Sir Joseph Ward went on to state tiiat he had received no communication from the leaders. He intimated that a section of the United Party opposed his leadership. The situation was the result of a political skirmish. Sir Joseph concluded be stating that he had not invited the offer.
