(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, Aug. 20. Football in the lower end of the district on Saturday was very disappointing, and the senior match for the Nash Cup between Hui Mai and Shannon was a sorry exhibition. From the start to the end play was of a mediocre nature, and would not have done credit to second-grade teams. The collaring was regarded as a “joke,” while tho scrum work was very ragged. The only bright feature was an occasional run. The match eventually resulted in a win for Manakau, 17—6.
As a result of the junior final, Huia Mai beat Miranui, 6—3, after a good game. The precentage of lambs this season is quito satisfactory, and a consignment will shortly bo sent from Manakau to Wellington. Mr R. Bevan and Mr J. Staples have some splendid samples of what the district is capable of producing. The Levin '.Bowling Club will open its season on October 6th.
Mr W. H. Field, M.P., was among the visitors to Otaki on Saturday.
A tender for £1750 has been accepted for improvements at the Otaki Hospital. Work is shortly to be put in hand, but tho residents of the district aro now anxious to know what •is to be the move in connection with the appointment of a medical man. Unless a first-class doctor is appointed, the institution will be as little used as previously, while on the other hand it would not pay the same a largo salary. A medical man with the right to private practico might get over the difficulty. At tho monthly meeting of the Otaki Plunket Society Mrs Barlow was appointed to attend the conference to bo held in Wellington shortly. In the Otaki-Lcvin golf match on Saturday at Otaki the home team won B—4. Tho attendance at the Manakau School last week was reduced to 34, due to influenza and measles.
