The police, seeking, an effective method of stopping car bandits, have tested a steel, spiked mat weighing forty-six pounds and containing one hundred two-inch spikes. A man was able to stretch the mat across the road in a few seconds, and a car approachingv at thirty-five miles per hour had all its tyres punctured and the speed reduced to fourteen miles in a distance of 100 yards.
