PERSONAL

Messrs F. C. Denz, J. W. Fergie and W. White, formerly of the local railway staff, journeyed from Wellington yesterday to attend the Railway ball last evening. At the meeting of the Wanganui Education Board yesterday, Mr W. A. Collins was re-elected chairman. Mr E. F. Hemingway referred to the excellent work done by Mr Collins/ in that position. Mr Collins thanked the members for their continued confidence in him. A 'Wellington telegram states that Assistant-Bishop F. T. Molyneux has been appointed to succeed Bishop Stewart as Bishop of Melanesia. Rev. Frederick August BOnnett, Maori missioner in Hawke’s Bay, has been appointed Suffragan Bishop to the Bishop of Waiapu with the title of Bishop of Ao-tea-roa.

Prior to the commencement of the

business at the meeting of the Wanganui Education Board yesterday, a warm welcome was extended to Messrs Tingey (Feilding) and Coleman (Rangitikei), two new members. The chairman referred to the excellent service* rendered by both gentlemen on various local bodies and expressed the opinion that their presence would materially strengthen the board. The late Mr R. Stone Florance, who died at Christchurch while on a trip to .attend the jubilee celebrations of that city, was many years ago. a former resident of Woodville, where he practised as a barrister and solicitor. In 1898 he was appointed Resident Magistrate .at Chatham Islands and was later transferred to the Bay of Islands, the Marlborough district and Gisborno. On retiring in 1921 he went to reside near Russell, where he had spent the closing years of his life. While in Woodvillo Mr Florance took tho keenest interest in the welfare of the town and particularly of the public library, being a great reader. He was a most courtly gentleman and kind to everyono with whom he came in contact.
