KNEW MR HOOVER.

WHEN MINING IN AUSTRALIA

OLD FRIENDS MEET IN U.S.A,

In days long before the war, Mr 11. C. Hoover, the Republican candidate in the forthcoming Bresidental elections in tho United States, was a prominent figure in Australian mining circles, and ho also visited New Zealand. Mr R. B. McComas, an Australian, who knew Mr Hoover well in those days, had tho pleasure recently of travelling on the same train part of the way across tho continent and of meeting him at Omaha and two other stopping places. . As a distinguished geologist, Mr Hoover, early in his career, became interested in mining and he first visited West Australia in 1897.. Two years later he was chief engineer to the Chinese Imperial Bureau of Mines. After the Boxer rebellion he visited jnany parts of the globe. In Australia Mr Hoover wag_a partner in tho firm of Bewick, Moreing and Company, managers of the Sons of Gwalior mino and many other wellknown propositions. “I was very interested to meet Mr Hoover again in America,” Mr McComas said. “His special train from Chicago to San Francisco was run as a second division to the Limited, by which I travelled, and our trains crossed by the same ferry to San Francisco. “Mr Hoover is not a good speaker, but his knowledge of the world is remarkable. His success in the management of West Australian gold mines and, in fact, in everything lie touched, was phenomenal.” “If America elects Mr Hoover as president,” added Mr McComas, “it will, in my opinion, be.good not only for the United States, but also for the world- at large. PTo has a fine out look on world affairs.”
