TE KAWAU RUGBY SUB-UNION
(From Our Own Correspondent.) SANDON, Aug. 15.
Tho Oroua junior representative team visited Sandon on Saturday to meet the elect of Te Kawau and wero defeated by 24 points to 9. The gamo was not so onesided as the scores would indicate, tho visitors’ forwards having the best of the game, but tho homo backs wero superior. Te Kawau kicked off and Oroua took play to tho To Kawau twenty-five. Play was fairly even for a time, when To Kawau carried play closo to tho Oroua lino. Tho visitors secured from tho scrum and cleared with a line kick. Te Kawau were not to be denied, and L. Moffatt, after a smart run. handed on to Sargcsson to score. The kick by Gardener added tho extra points. Blue (Oroua) then attacked and from a loose rush Glassford scored. The kick at goal failed. The Oroua forwards wero now putting in solid play and Mopham scored a try which was not converted. To Kawau, through tho efforts of Scott and M. Moffatt, saw the latter score closo to the posts. Tho some player found tho uprights. Even play followed for a time, and from a looso scrum Mudford secured and passed to Uru who cut in nicely to score near tho posts. Gardener goaled. Half-time sounded with play in neutral territory. Play was even for a time in tho second spoil when Uru secured and after a good run lost the ball when near the Oroua line. Tho blue forwards set up a hot attack, but the black defence was sound. Te Kawau with a looso rush took play to tho blues’ lino and Mudford secured to dive ovor for a try. Moffatt failed with tho kick. Play was in midfield for a time when Gustofson secured and after a nice run handed on for Groome to score. Gardener’s kick fell short. Tho Te Kawau backs wero now having the best of it and Scott put in a splendid run to hand on for L. Moffatt to cross. Tho kick failed. Tho Oroua forwards then took a hand and their effort was rewarded with Mopham scoring his cecond try. Time was called soon after. Mr E. Spry was in oontrol of tho game. The condition of the player O’Conner who was badly hurt during the ItongoteaHuia Alai game at Awahuri on Saturday is reported to bo much more favourable. Football enthusiasts in this loc»lity wish him a speedy recovery. The news of the passing of tho late Thomas F. Richardson, of Matahiwi, was heard with sorrow in tho district. Although tho deceased gentleman was not often in this locality, he has been well known and universally respected by all of the older residents. Ho has been a patient sufferer for many months and the end has been expected for some time. He leaves a widow and a large number of children and grandchildren to whom is extended heartfelt sympathy.
