DRY SPELL BROKEN.

HEAVY RAIN FALLSBENEFIT TO COUNTRY DISTRICTS. After a long spell of dry weather, heavy rain set in in Palmerston North on Monday, continuing throughout the greater part of yesterday and this morning. In the country districts the fall has been much appreciated, both for replenishing the domestic supply and from the dairying point of view. Many water tanks had been nearly emptv but, with the rain of the last two days, they are overflowing again. Milk production has been aiigmented, one factory reporting -that its increased supply amounts to the equivalent of four or five boxes of butter per day and brings the supply for this time of the year to considerably above that for the corres*ponding time in 1927. When the rain set in the Mangahao hydro-electric works resumed normal running. For some time past the water supply had been depleted, and steps had been taken to conserve it, both the Palmerston North and Wellington plants feeding back into the mains. With the filling of the dams, however, normal running was at once resumed. . For the 24 hours at nine o clock this morning 53 points of rain were recorded in Palmerston North, nliiie for the preceding 24 hours 41 points were registered. Up till then only 15 points had fallen during the present month.
