Mr J. Doig left yesterday to attend a meeting of the executive of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants .at Wellington. The management committee of the Manawatu Football Association last evening passed a vote of sympathy with the president, Mr J. Ch Young, in the death of his mtoher. Professor Peren, head of Massey College, was accorded a welcome as a new member at the monthly meeting yesterday afternoon of the council of the ' Chamber of Commerce. A distinguished visitor to the Dominion, who arrived from London by the Remuera yesterday, is Professor R. S. Conway, Litt.D., F.8.A., who is recognised throughout the world as a 1 leading authority on the classics. Mr A. Amos, lecturer in agriculture ! and director of farming at Cambridge University, is visiting New Zealand to ! Investigate labour organisation on vari- . ous types of farms. He is at present in ! Wellington. ; It was reported at the meeting of ; the Manawatu Rugby Council last , evening that Mr K. Peebles, who some - time ago was injured in a Rugby match, was progressing favourably, although still a hospital out-patient. Judgo T. F. Carey, of the Criminal Court of Hoboken, New Jersey, who joined the ship at Balboa, arrived by the Remuera yesterday accompanied by his daughter, Miss A. R. Carey. After spending a few days in Wellington 1 they will go on to Sydney. On account of illness. Mr W. D. Lysnar (Gisborne) and Mr J. Bitcliener (Waitaki) havo been granted four days’ leavo of absence from the House of Representatives. Mr H. M. Campbell (Hawke’s Bay) has been granted three days’ leave on account of illness in the family. An Australian Press AssociationUnited Service message announces the death of Mr Louis Tracy, journalist and author. Bom at Liverpool in 1863, Mr Tracy lectured and wrote extensively on the war. Some of his publications were “Rainbow Island,” “Diana of the Moors,” “His Unknown Wife,” “A Son of the Immortals.” At a meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Football Association last evening a vote of appreciation for past services was passed to Mr H. Crouch who is leaving New Zealand. Mr Crouch has been one of the keenest soccer enthusiasts in Palmerston North and has for some time been an active member of the Referees’ Association. Reporting at last night’s meeting of the Technical School Committee that Mr H. Linley Richardson commenced duties on August 1 as art instructor, the director, Mr G. G. Hancox, stated that he wished to place on record the valuable servioes rendered by Messrs F. D. Ellis, D. Thwaites and D. Morgan, and by Messrs H. F. Gabites and J. Mason in carrying on the art classes during the past six months.
Sir Mark Sheldon was a passenger by the Maheno, which arrived at Wellington from Sydney yesterday morning. He sailed later in the day by the Maunganui for San Francisco. Sir Mark Sheldon was Commissioner for the Australian Commonwealth in the United States in 1921 and 1922.' He was an Australian representative at the League of Nations Assembly at Geneva In 1922, and at the Imperial Economic Conference in London m 1925.
