RURAL BUS TRAFFIC.
V A LITE TO PALMERSTON NORTH. INTERESTING FIGURES. “The rural bus traffic means a lot to Palmerston North,” stated Mr Al. A. Eliott, president of tho Chamber of Commerce, at yesterday- afternoon s meeting of that body. “Figures that I now have show that 39 buses come into Palmerston North, daily, bringing an average of 420 passengers, with GoU on Saturdays. Moreover, over 1000 packages and parcels per week are being despatched by- these buses into tho surrounding districts, apart from what the passengers carry with them. The rural buses carried passengers to Palmerston North, Mr Eliott added, daily from Feilding, Foxton, Wellington, Wanganui, Masterton, Pahiatua, Marton, ltongotea, Levin, Asliliurst, Pohangina, Napier and Dannevirke. Mr A. P. Stuart commented that, when the new railway station was erected, owing to its distance from the centre of the town, the railway revenue would suffer more than at present. The chairman: Experience in other countries shows that the railways reach a certain point of recession and then move up again.
