FRENCH MANOEUVRES.
BRITISH PARTICIPATION.
GERMAN PRESS CRITICISM,
(United Service). LONDON, Aug. 12,
Tho Daily News’s Berlin correspondent states: “The news that a British regiment is participating in French cavalry manoeuvres in the occupied area lias startled German opinion. “It may be true that the British Army of Occupation has acted only according to military tenets,” states the Frankfurter Zeitung, but the Government in London ought to have understood that such co-operation of British and French trops on German soil cannot fail to have political reactions.” The Vossische Zeitung states: “It is, incomprehensible that neither Paris nor London recognises tho enormity of this action. It is a blow at the policy of Locarno, and makes a mock of tho solemnity with which it is intended to surround tho signing of the Anti-War Pact in Paris. They ought to understand that .as long as Allied generals in tho Rhineland are permitted to double-cross tho policy of their Governments there can be no idea of mutual understanding.”
WAR OFFICE EXPLANATION. (British Official Wireless). RUGBY. Aug. 12.. It is explained at the British War Office that the participation of the Eighth King’s Royal Irish Hussars—the only regiment of British cavalry serving on the Rhine —under General Guillauniat is merely the result of a friendly invitation on the part of tho French. No other British regiments are joining in tho French manoeuvres.
