GRAFT CHARGES.

S. Y r . MALING SENTENCED,

AN APPEAL LODGED. SYDNEY, July 31. Silas Young Maling, who was formerly deputy manager of the Sydney city electricity department and the principal figure in the recent inquiry into allegations of graft, was fhiefi £SOO and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for oorruptly receiving £10,600 from the English firm of Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd.

In delivering sentence the magistrate stated that Maling had proved false to his trust and had prostituted his important office by levying blackmail on persons endeavouring to do business with his principals. Immediately sentence was delivered Maling’s counsel lodged an appeal to the quarter sessions Appeal Court, without prejudice to Maling’s right to apply to the Full Court for a writ of prohibition to restrain tho magistrate from further acting upon the conviction.
