NEW SUBMARINES.

PURPOSE MISUNDERSTOOD

LONDON, July 13.. Australian criticisms utterly misconstrue the purpsoe and character of the new Australian submarines, Otway and Oxley, said the naval attache at Australia House (Captain Feakes).

They ,are not intended to accompany the fleet, but to cruise in the Pacific alone, for which high speeds are not necessary. Their surface speed is 15$ knots, and equals that of the latest foreign submarine. The report that H.M.A.S. Australia is joining them at Malta, is unfounded. They .are capable of continuing to Australia unaeoompanied: The rumour that they have broken down is emphatically denied in naval circles.
