A sale of English, Scottish and Australian Bank shares at £8 lls 3d, reported at tho afternoon call was the only transaction recorded yesterday on tho Wellington Stock Exchange. Government securities were slow. The 4£ per cent, bonds were wanted at £9B 10s, the 5£ per cent, bonds (1936) at £IOO 15s, and 6± por cent, stock (1933) at £IOO 10s. Wellington Gas debentures were sotady at £IOO, and N.Z. Breweries 10 por cent, bonds at 23s lOd. Bank shares wore steady, and in good demand. Tbore were buyers of Commercial Bank at 30s 6d, cum. dividend, English, Scottish and Australian Bank at £8 10s 9d, National Bank of Now Zealand ac £7 2s 9d, Natioanl Bank of Australasia, £5 paid, at £9 5s 9d, Bank of Now Zealand at £2 19s, Bank of New Zealand D shares at 26s 6d, Union Bank (local and Melbourne registers) at £ls 4s. Sellers quoted £9 14s for Bank of Adelaido, £l4 18s for Bank of Australasia, 34s 3d for Australian Bank of Commerce, and £SO 7s 6d for Bank of New South Wales. Financial shares were firm, Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile showed a sharp riso to £llO, which was offered by buyers. Goldsbrough, Mort were wanted at £2 lls, Equitable Building at £8 3s, New Zealand Investment at 9s 4d, and New Zealand Guarantee Corporation, ordinary, at 8s lid, and preference at 21s, Insurance shares were in fair demand, with buyers of Now Zoaland Insurance at 42s 3d cum. dividend, South British Insurance at 60s, and Standard Insurance at 635. There were bids of 24s 4d for Christchurch Gas and 29s 7d for Wellington Gas, ordinary, and 17s for preference. Gisborne Gas were wanted at 9s 6d. Gear Meat shares wore firmer at 40s Id, Huddart-Parker were in demand at 48s Bd, Union Steam at 20s 2d, and P. and O. deferred stock at £230. Wellington Woollien continue in demand, and show a rising tendency. There were bids of £6 7s 6d for tho ordinary and £6 8s for preference. Westport Coal were steady at 30s, and Hikurangi Coal, preference, at 8s 6d. There were buyers of Leyland O’Brien Timber at 31s 6d, New Zealand Breweries at 43s 4d; Staples and Co. at 365, Ward and Co. at 40s 2d, British Tobacco at 42s 3d, Electrolytio Zinc, ordinary at 32s and preference at 333 6d, New Zealand Drug at 69s 6d, New Zealand Paper Mills at 15s 9d, Sharland and Co. at 19s 6d, Wellington Queen’s Theatro at 235, Wilson’s Cement at 38s 3d, and Mount Lyell Mining at 35s 2d.

MINING- , „ Mount Lyell ...../ 115 2 FREE MARKETING. MR J. B. HINE’S VIEWS. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 28. Addressing the suppliers of the Patua Dairy Company at their annual meeting, Mr J. B. Hine, a member of the Dairy Produce Board, congratulated the shareholders upon the payout up to the present of Is BJd per lb. butterfat, which, he said, was proof that individual companies with a free hand could dispose' of their produce to better advantage than could be done under control. Free marketing, he stated, had been his main objective since he was elected to the board twelve months agio. He had had a lonely furrow to plough, and had not received the support he anticipated from his colleagues, who were not in the same position as he, and did not have the same solid support of their electors. , Although it took twelve months to get, the farmers now had free marketing untrammelled, and were reaping its benefits. “Although subjected to a lot (of oriti- . cism,” said Mr Hine, “the board has done good work.” SALE OF JERSEY CATTLE. LATE MR W. T. WILLIAMS’S HERD. FAMOUS COW BOUGHT BY C. G. C. DERMER. Part of the Jersey stud herd of the late Mr W. T. Williams, of Pukehou (Hawke s Bavl was sold last week when 37 cows, eight heifers and 12 yearling to three-year bulls came under the hammer. There was an excellent attendance of the publio From all parts of the North Island and competition was keen throughout. Among the offering was the famous cow Holly Oak Annie, which was purchased by Mr C G. C: Dermer, of Cheltenham, for 400 gns. The heifers made up to 70gns., and the bulls up to 105gns. A five-legged calf has been born on the I property of Mr Bishop of Makotuku. The ealf P walks on three legs, the fourth leg being short and the fifth growing under it and Changing down under the calf s belly. Tbo or If is quite normal in other respects.
