VISCOUNT BYNG’S APPOINTMENT.
(Australian Press Association.) LONDON, July 5. It has been arranged between tho Government Whips and members of the Labour Party that the Home Office vote will be brought on in the House of Commons to-day so as to afford the Opposition an op port unity of initiating a debate on the appointment of Viscount Byng as Commissioner of Police. It is reported that Sir William Joynson-Hicks may feel it desirable to explain more fully Viscount Byng’s task.
The phrase “Stern call to duty” has not been used lightly by Viscount Byng. Administrative reforms of great importance are in prospect. Some of the changes involved will require courageous handling. EFFECT OF POLICE ACT. (Australian Press Association.) Received July 6, 12.15 p.m. LONDON, July 5. Replying in the House of Commons to Mr J. H. Hayes, Labour member for Edgehill, in reference to Viscount Byng’s appointment, Sir William Joyn-son-Hicks stated that the Police Act specifically prevented the Commissioner from being selected from members of tho House of Commons.
