MEN’S COMPETITION. N SECOND ROUND OPENED. The second round of tho Manawatu Hockey Association’s competition was commenced yesterday on the Showgrouds, when Phoenix (7) beat Central Old Boys (4) and Broadway (6) beat Palmerston (1). PHOENIX v. C. 0.8. C. 0.8. opened the game with a fast attack and had Phoenix busy defending, but Bentley, following good stick work, scored with a speedy shot.— C. 0.8. 1, Phoenix 0. Phoenix immediately retaliated and, in a few minutes, Lundy had equalised. The whites played an excellent game from then onwards and before the first spell had ended Lundy had scored twice, while Turner also had found the net with a snappy shot. Both sides set the pace in the second spell and the game was fairly even until Hoare secured the yellows’ second score. Phoenix, however, were not long in replying. Turner scoring. Following good stick work, an excellent centre enabled Bentley to find the net. Phoenix 5, C. 0.8. 3. Play for the next few minutes soon saw the yellows hard put to defend, and Turner and D. Hoare each scored in turn. In the final stages, the whites rallied and, within a few minutes of time, Anderson netted, the final scores being:—Phoenix 7, C.0.8.-.4. BROADWAY v. PALMERSTON. With only seven men, Palmcrs'ton had little chance against Broadway, although in the first spell the scores were one all, Smith (Palmerston) and Cockery (Broadway) having goaled. In the second spell, however, numbers told and, despite a stubborn defence, Broadway added five goals to their tally, Cooper, playing centre-forward being responsible. LADIES’ HOCKEY. YESTERDAY’S GAMES. The play in the whole of the ladies’ hockey matches yesterday was disappointing. With a touring team in view, the local clubs will need to show a vast improvement. At the Sportsgrounds W.E.O.G. beat Ohakea 3 nil, and High School A beat Rosco 2-1. W.E.O.G. v. OHAKEA. ■ The game throughout was dull and both teams gave a poor exhibition. W.E.O.G. opened the match with a rush and in a few minutes had found the net. Ohakea attacked in turn, but their efforts were fruitless. Old Girls missed two or three shots by narrow margins and centre field play prevailed for a time. Later, Old Girls again missed scoring on several occasions, until Miss Hall managed to find the net. Shortly afterwards Miss E. Morgan shot a goal and play was fairly even until half-time. In tho second spell, play was mediocre and no further scores were made, the game ending: W.E.O.G. 3, Ohakea nil. Mr R. L. C. Aitchison refereed. HIGH SCHOOL v. ROSCO. Both teams were fairly evenly matched, but neither played up to standard. From the bully High School seemed to hold the advantage, and .after a period of even play scored. A few minutes later the school forwards brought the ball down again find added a further goal. Neither side had any material advantage for the remainder of the spell, although High School missed two or three shots. In the second spell, Rosco were successful in scoring and the play was fairly even. The scores at the conclusion were: High School 2, Rosco 1. Mr A. E. Blackbourn refereed. HIGH SCHOOL B v. P.D.C. | The game between High School B and P.D.C. at tho High School grounds ended in a win for P.D.C. by .5 goals to 2. Messrs Vasey and Dixon refereed. NORDEN CUP, MATCH. Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, July 4. The second challenge match for the Norden Cup was played at Darinevirko to-day on a fast ground,, the challengers being Wairoa. The holders gave a great exhibition of hockey; defeating Wairoa by six goals to nil, the losers being outclassed in, every department of tne game. Goals were scored for the winners by J... Smith (3), W. McIntosh (2), and Earle.
