SOCIAL SERVICE.
REPORT TO SYNOD. WELLINGTON, July 4. The report of the Social Service Board to the Wellington Diocesan Synod last evening stated that the executive of the Anglican Boys’ Home Society was able to report that the year’s work has been one of quiet but steady progress. Owing to the widespread unemployment, and consequent hard times, the society had had to carry a heavy burden, and the accommodation had been severely taxed. The number of boys at the Lower Hutt was 69, and at Masterton Ijl. It was most gratifying to note that every boy in the Hutt home passed the State school class examination. At Sedgley much-needed repairs and extension had been carried out. Tho executive, while appreciating the good work of their friends, reminded Synod that considerable further additions to Sedgley Home were required to bring it up to accommodate at least 20 boys. The Church of England Immigration Committee had met the 19 ships arriving at Wellington with immigrants during the past year. In addition to meeting ships, trains carrying immigrants from each Auckland boat had been met, and the same help extended to them as to those coming to Wellington direct. The past year had been a busy one, for so many had sought their help, in order to relieve distress and find employment. Referring to the St. Barnabas’ Babies’ Home, the board said the home has been full the whole year. It had been decided to reduce the maximum age from three to two, as experience had shown that this was in the best interests of the children. It had not been possible to take actual steps to commence the new building. Their fund was not large enough for the whole, but the possibility of a useful beginning had been under consideration. The report was considered in committee.
