HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly mooting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board was held this afternoon, Sir Jas. G. Wilson presiding. Also present were Mrs L. A. Abraham and Messrs J. IC. Hornblow, M. A. Moody, J. T. Kolias, F. J. Ryder, G. A. Monk, O. McElrcy, L. T. McLean, F. Pycroft, S. A. Broadbelt. W. Greenhow, V. E. Smith, G. P. Oaticy, 11. W. Smart and J. A. Nash, M.P. The secretary' of tho committee of enquiry into tho treatment and prevention of tuberculosis wrote advising that tho committee would sit in Palmerston North on Saturday to take evidence.

Mr H. Jeromson, Ruahine Street, wrote thanking the board for the attention given him while in hospital.— “It is nice to get something that is not a kick,” commented tho chairman. MANAGING SECRETARY’S REPORT. Tho managing secretary (Mr A. J. Phillipps) reported, inter alia, as under:—Al a - tornity Home: During tho month tho contractor finished work on tho Maternity Home building. _ Ho Is doing tho rough work in connection with tho grounds and paths, and has made good progress despite .sovcral wet days. This month, if the weather is suitable, a start, will bo made in putting in the flower beds. _ Bulk store: Tho contractor on this work is making satisfactory progress. The brickwork on tho first storey is nearing completion. Glass house: Plans and specifications for this work aro now complete and I would ask author-

ity to call tenders. I have on hand sufficient work to keep the carpenter fully occupied for some months and I would suggest that tenders bo invited for this work. Provision baa been made on this year’s estimates. Fever wards: The carpenter has completed tho work oil tho fever wards, and. as tho weather permits, the painting is being carried out. During the next month the painter will ho working inside the hospital in wet weather, interior painting: The corridor in the new block requires attention, and the work of. painting the sterilising room in the Princess Mary Ward and Prince of Wales Ward will be put in hand shortly. OTHER REPORTS.

The medical superintendent (Dr F. G. Ward) reported that- 230 patients had been admitted during tho _ month and 213 discharged, 197 being in tho institution at tho end of May. Admisisons* to the scarlet fever and diphtheria wards had totalled 31 and 1 respectively, leaving 41 and 5 in the wards on May 31. The daily average number of occupied hods for the month was 196, and tho highest number in hospital on any one day 209, which two numbers constituted a record.

Tho matron (Miss Janet N. McGhie) reported that the general health of the staff was good. The following donations had been received : —Magazines, Mrs Cooper, Mrs Hall and Mrs Watson; books, Mrs Tragic and Mrs Brain; flowers, College Street School and Girls’ High School. On May 12, National Hospital Day, about 20 girls from the High School, accompanied by tho principal, Miss F. J. W. Hodges, spent some time looking over tho Hospital, and wero later entertained at afternoon tea. These girls made and dressed a very nice doll for tho children in the scarlet fever ward. Mrs Blaekmoro had sent along a doll for the children’s ward. The Salvation Army Band had played in tho grounds on May 3, while on May 13 competitors at the Manawatu Competitions had given a concert.—Votes of thanks were accorded tho donors mentioned.

Tho matron of the Old People’s Home (Miss H. Petersen) reported that, on May 31, there had been 49 inmates in the institution—42 males and seven females.
