KOSY THEATRE. JACKIE COOGAN’S MASTERPIECE. In his latest picture for Mctro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Jackie Coogan takes to tho sea on a huge modern liner as a page or bellboy. His nickname, “Buttons,” is the title given tfo the picture. Jackie first comes into view trying to stow away on a crack Atlantic liner, but a kindly captain sentences him not to gaol, but to a training school. Working zealously, twelve months later lie is mentioned in tho “honour role,” and is drafted to his ship. After doing a page boy’s duties for 'some time, “Buttons” sews a piece of calico on the seat of the pants of the captain’s page —and thus realises his immediate ambition in one splendid salute! “I am your page now, sir!” he reports. The unsuspecting skipper is filled with admiration. But now a drama of the sea takes place —the fickle fiancee of Captain Travers suddenly transfers her affections, and “Buttons” knows not how to broach his hero on this matter. Ho finds a- way at last —but is disgraced for his trouble. Confined to the brig with his pal, the gym., instructor, he is turning over his troubles when the immense liner strikes an iceberg. Superb drama, interwoven with the mjost impressive wreck sequence ever flashed on the screen, characterises tho end of “Buttons,” and the end is in every way worthy of the magnificent story, lavish production and skilfully chosen cast, including Lars Hanson as tho captain. “Buttons” is due at the Ivosy Theatre to-night. The additional feature, besides the ordinary supporting short subjects, is Jack Perrin with his wonder horse, Starlight, in “.The Man From Oklanoma.” PALACE THEATRE. “LADIES MUST DRESS.” Virginia Valli, playing the feminine lead in “Ladies Must Dress,” which has its initial showing at tho Palace Theatre tonight, brings to the screen one of the gayest portrayals she has essayed in many months. She is surrounded by an excellent cast. The list includes Lawrence Gray, in the leading masculine role, and Hallam Cooley of Helen and Warren fame, Nancy Carroll and Earle Fox. In this sermon of laughs the producer seems to have had one of his happiest inspirations when he selected Miss Valli for this production. She is ideally cast as a plain little strenographer in a big department ', store. The story is packed with humour. A lesson for husbands, wives and sweethearts is probably the best definition for this picture, and the best part of it is that it is preached with laughter. A specially selected score of screen music will bo featured by the popular Palace select orchestra. This talented combination comprises six gifted musicians whose combined effort is nothing else than a musical treat. Reservations may be made at Martin's book shop or by ’phone 5328.
