GORGE ROAD.
NATIONAL HIGHWAY WANTED,
(By Telegraph.—Special to Standard). FEILDING, Alay 9.. A letter was received at to-day’s meeting of the Oroua County Council from the Pahiatua Borough Council forwarding a resolution passed at the last meeting of the latter council asking that tho Member of Parliament for Pahiatua (Air E. A. Ransom) be requested' to assist in getting the Alanawatu Gorge Road Control Board disbanded by tho Government and for tho Alain Highways Board to assume control of tho road and bridges, and, also, to take over tlio existing liabjlities of loans and maintenance. The co-operation of all contributing bodies and members of Parliament for the districts concerned was asked for.
“This is getting away from what we have been working for for years,” declared Cr. AlcElroy. “AYo want the Government to take over tho road and declare it a national highway and then it will be a charge on the Public Works Department.” Tho chairman (Cr. Campbell) said that if any road in Alow Zealand should be a national highway it was the Gorge Road, but the action of the Pahiatua Borough Council was certainly not getting the matter advanced any further than before.
Cr. AlcElroy thought that if the Alain Highways Board did take over the road the Oroua County would still bo responsible for its quota of contribution and this was what they wanted to avoid. He moved that the Pahiatua Borough Council ho written to informing it that tho Oroua County Council was not in entire sympathy with the scheme proposed, but would support any proposal to have tho road declared a national highway. The Oroua Council considered that the timo was opportune to again approach tho Government on the matter. The motion was carried without further comment.
