MEETING AT ASHHURST. FALLS IN TWO RACES. RIDERS’ LUCKY ESCAPES. By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) ASHHURST, Jan. 23. Brilliant weather prevailed for the Manawatu Motor Club’s annVial race meeting at. Ashhurst to-day resulting in an attendance of several thousand spectators. Many of New Zealand’s most prominent riders were present and with the track in good order fast times were recorded. Twelve races figured on the programme, with an. average of 12 entrants for each. The club’s new lap scoring Board was a decided improvement on the old one. It was in use for the first time and was very much appreciated by the public. The events were got off well to time, all the officials carrying out their allotted tasks to perfection. Results are as follow: ASHHURST HANDICAP, of five miles, machines up to 340 c.c.s. I. Spence, 20 secs 1 E. Pink, 20 secs 2 A. Harker, 15 secs 3 Time, 5 mins. 14 secs. Won by a 100 yards, the same distance to the third man. G. Dixon (5 secs) was fourth 300 yards further back. There were sixteen starters including C. Goodwin (scr) who, when in the third lap came to grief through entering the straight too quickly. The rider was thrown a big distance but was uninjured, only suffering slight concussion. The winner’s time was oniins, 9 secs. RAUMAI HANDICAP, 5 miles, machines over 350 c.c.s. and under 500. W. Allan, 15secs., ... ... ••• 1 D. Smith, 15secs. ■••• 2 D. Managh, ssees. ... 3 Time 4mins. 55 2-ssecs. Won by the length of the straight, 50 yards separating second and third riders. There were eight starters. The winner’s time was ten seconds less. POHANGINA HANDICAP, open, 5 miles. W. Herbert, 15 secs ... .... 1 P Coleman, scr, ••• 2 C. Wilkinson, 20 secs 3 Time 4 mins. 48 secs. Coleman rode a great race and was only 150 yards behind the winner who was lapping in 54 2-5 secs, compared with Coleman’s 52 1-5 secs. W. Allan came to grief at the same place as Goodwin in the first race, but got up and rode off before the ambulance reached him. The winner’s time was 4 mins. 38 secs. Eleven starters. Time, Bmin. 6 4-ssecs. Harken led the field till the last lap, when Tolley caught him a quarter of a mile from home. Morgan passed both rounding the home turn, winning by 50 yards. There were thirteen starters.
