EFFECT OF GALE.
POWER CUT OFF.
One of the results of the strong gale, which was experienced locally to-day, was the cutting off temporarily of electric power to Palmerston North, Rangiotu and Longburn this morning. A wire leading to the transformers at Te Matai sub-station • came in contact with a switch operating-rod and burnt through, causing the oil switches at Bunythopre to operate, cutting off the supply. With commendable promptitude Mr W. A. Waters (chief engineer to the Manawatu-Croua Board) and members of the board’s staff reached the spot and the trouble was remedied and the power restored in about 32 minutes.
The borough stand-by plant made several efforts to restore the supply, but the load was so heavy that it was unequal to the task. Flowers and shrubs suffered severely from the effects of the wind and considerable damage was caused to gardens. METEOROLOGIST’S FORECAST. SHOWERS PREDICTED. The Government meteorologist telegraphed to-day ; —The indications are for westerly winds, strong to gale. There is a prospect of fair to cloudy weather with scattered showers. The barometer is unsteady.
