FEILDING NEWS

RAILWAY SERVICE. FURTHER PROTEST. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Oct. 15. Following on the protest entered by the Feilding Borough Council on Thursday night against the omissj.oll of Feilding from the' list of stopping places, the Oroua County Council yesterday also decided to forward a protest in support of the Borough Council. The matter was raised by Cr. 0. McElroy, who claimed that the Council Council should give the Borough Council all the support it could in furthering this protest. “We should show them that we are determined, he said, and went on to state the objections to the omission of Feilding as had been given at the Borough Council meeting the previous night. “The Limited stops at the National Park for the convenience of globe trotters, . Cr. Mcelroy added, “yet the people who have money sunk in the railways don’t appear to receive the consideration they should. We have previously pressed for the Limited to stop, and on those occasions we have been told that it was the grade that prevented it. Then the last reply was that the department wanted to make the express a train of sleepers. Well, why isn’t a Feilding man entitled to a sleeper if he wants it?” he asked. The speaker considered that a strong deputation should be sent to Wellington to interview the Minister of Railways to press the matter of the trains stopping, the deputation to consist of members of the Oroua and Kiwitea County Councils and the Feilding Borough Council. The chairman (Cr. A. Campbell) observed that the matter gave the council some concern inasmuch as they had a large number of ratepayers whose centre was Feilding. The question of the stopping of the Limited had been a vexing one for some time, and the speaker was pleased to 6ee that Mr J. G. Eliott, M.P., had asked the House for information regarding the revenue of the Limited at the intermediate sections for he (Cr. Campbell) thought that when the information was supplied it would be shown that intermediate traffic had a big bearing 011 the revenue.

Following further discussion it was resolved to suggest the idea of a deputation to the Mayor (Mr E. Fair) and if it were not acted upon, the chairman was authorised to send a wire to the Prime Minister in support of the Borough Council’s protest. WOMEN’S DIVISIONOF FARMERS’ UNION. The monthly meeting of tho Feilding branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was presided< v over by Mrs T. Green, there being a good attendance of members. A full report of the annual conference held 111 Wellington last July was received and is being passed ou from member to member tor perusal. The secretary of the Marten branch wrote drawing the attention of members to the facilities for obtaining literature from the Book Club at Marton. It had been reported that not many members were availing themselves of the privileges offering regarding books. The report showed that the bush nurse and permanent housekeeper had been fully occupied in the Hunterville and Karioi districts and that five emergency housekeepers were sent out into the country during the last month. To help extend these services funds are being raised by the various branches.
