RAGLAN SEAT.

THE REFORM INTERESTS. MR MERVYN WELLS AVAILABLE. HAMILTON, Sept. 6. Mr Mervyn Wells, of Cambridge, has consented to nomination as a Reform candidate for the Raglan electorate, and has added his name to those from whom selection will be made by the Reform Party at a meeting at Tuakau on Saturday. MR ALLAN’S CANDIDATURE. . STATEMENT OF POSITION. PUKEKOHE, Sept. 6. The Raglan by-election campaign was opened this evening when Mr E. Allan, of Buckland, a Reform candidate, addressed a meeting of electors in the Buckland Hall. There were about 80 people present. A motion of condolence with the relatives of the Hon. R. F. Bollard was passed unanimously. Mr Allan said New Zealand’s political problems all reverted to the land question. He outlined what he considered a practical scheme for land settlement. Regarding finance he said he favoured a State bank as a means of regulating the charges and policies of the other banks. Mr Allan dealt with the questions of agricultural research, railway charges and the development of industries. He also referred to labour problems.

Asked whether he intended definitely to go to the poll or whether he would submit his name to the Reform Selection Conference for the electorate, and abide by its selection of a candidate to officially represent Reform. Mr* Allan replied that he had told the Reform organiser that day, after a long discussion, that he would refuse to bind himself to anything at all. If the men who had requested him to stand met together and recommended him to hand his name to the Selection Conference he would do so, but meanwhile he was perfectly free and independent. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Allan. COUNTRY PARTY’S DECISION. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, Sept. 7. At a representative meeting of the Country Party held at Ngariiawahia today, it was decided to nominate a candidate for the Raglan by-election.
