LEAGUE COUNCIL.

DANTZIG AFFAIR DISCUSSED,

GREECE SEEKING NONPERMANENT SEAT. GENEVA, Sept. 2. The Council met privately under the presidency of Senor Villegas, of Chile. The discussion was animated. It related to Dantzig affairs, including the city’s demand for the removal of a Polish munitions depot at Wester platte and the Polish naval harbour. The first public meeting of the Council has been fixed for this morning.

It is, rumoured that Sir Austen Chamberlain and M. Briand favour a postponement of the Preparatory Commission on Disarmament, which is at present fixed for November. It is known, however, that Dr. Stresemann intends to speak at the Assembly on the necessity for accelerating the work on general disarmament, in conformity with the pledges of the Treaty of Versailles.

M. Politis, the Greek representative on the Assembly, lias made it known that Greece is seeking the non-perman-ent seat on the Council vacated by Czeclio-Slovakia. There . are three other claimants—Finland, Denmark and Portugal. Sir Otto Niemeyer was elected chairman of the League’s finance committee.—A. and N.Z. cable.
