MOTOR OMNIBUSES.
ANOMALIES IN ACT. DEPUTATION TO BOROUGH COUNCIL. Desiring to obtain the Borough Council’s support in regard to representations being made to the Government for an amendment so as to remedy certain alleged anomalies in the Motor Omnibus Act, a deputation representing the Palmerston North motor omnibus proprietors, for whom Mr D. F. Smillie was the speaker, waited on the Borough Council last evening. Mr Smillie stressed the unfairness of certain clauses of the Act, especially those in regard to public safety and insurance. It was the opinion of the proprietors that the insurance imposed was much too high. Cr. Eliott characterised the Act ol last session as being one of the most unfair and arbitrary ever passed. The object of the Act was to protect’the railways at the expense of the general public. Motor transport was the most economical form, yet the Government was doing all possible to act as a hindrance. “In my opinion the futuro prosperity of Palmerston North will to a great extent depend on motor transportation,” concluded Cr. Eliott. Cr. Fitzherbert remarked that, as it stood at present; the Act appeared most unfair to the proprietors. He moved that the council support the omnibus proprietors of Palmerston North in making representations for the removal of any anomalies in the Act. On the suggestion of the Mayor it was decided that the town clerk be instructed to forward a letter placing the omnibus proprietors’ representations before the Government.
