FEILDING NEWS

MIDGET RUGBY. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Aug. 15. Not tho least interesting display of football which, the spectators on the polo grounds at Feilding on Saturday were treated to was the first round of the Feilding and District Midget competitions. Three matches were played and tho Taoinui v. Makino fixture provided the crowd with much amusement. Among the eight players of the former team was an athletic little Maori whom the spectators immediately christened “Nepia” and he cortainly gave every indication of having the style of the well-known full-back. Tho state of the ground mado no difference to the enthusiasm with which the youngsters entered upon their games and their knowledge of the elementary rules of Rugby was surprising. Following were the results of tho three matches —Lytton Street A 12 v. Manchester Street B 0; Manchester Street A 3 v. Lytton Street B 0; Taonui 24 v. Makino 0. HOCKEY. The first match for the possession of the McKelvie Cup was played on Saturday afternoon at Victoria Park when Feilding defeated Oroua subUnion by four goals to one. The continual rain in the morning had rendered the ground heavy and slippery and only a moderate number of spectators assembled to see the match, the football counter attraction proving too great. Following the bully off a free hit was awarded blacks (Oroua) and later one to blues (Feilding). When play settled down Miss Dewo put in a centre hit which was cleared bv Miss Martin and an Oroua attack followed. Matters were looking serious for Feilding when a home player infringed just outside the circle, but Miss Rankin made a greut save and cleared to Miss Amadio who worked up the wing before contring to Miss Richardson whose shot missed. From the 25 bully, Oroua carried play down the right wing to the blues’ circlo where Mis 6 Beattie mado a good save for Miss Dewe to carry play back to the visitors area to centre to Miss McKelvie whose shot narrowly missed. The Oroua left wing retaliated with a strong run, but met strong opposition in Misses Beattie and Pongelly and a promising return movement by Feilding was spoilt by offside play. Miss Beattie sent in a hot shot at the net which was averted by Miss Cummins at the expense of a corner from which Miss Dewe’s shot went over the net. A period of hard play round tho Oroua goal followed and despite a strong defence the attackers got through for Miss Waterworth to find tho net. Feilding 1, Oroua 0. From tho resumption of play the blacks took oommand and a quick movement down the right wing found the blacks in striking • distance and Miss Iwikau made no mistake. Oroua 1, Feilding 1. Oroua again got away from the bully-off, but were halted for offside play and the blues took advantage of the penalty to work back to tho visitors territory. Miss Amadio essayed to increase the Feilding tally, but her shots struck the net and a determined counter attack by the black saw Miss Rankin fill tho breach splendidly. The blues got back to the visitors goal by the use of good stickwork and Miss Amadio again tested the defence with a hot shot which was successfully met by Miss Cummins. Half-time sounded with the scores even.

Feilding pressed hard on resuming after tho interval and a shot by Miss Dewe flew over the net. The visiting forwards combined in a drive, but Miss Bridge cleverly took the ball and centred to Miss Dewe only for Miss Martim "to regain possession for the blacks. The movement, however, was not turned to account and the blues took charge. Following a bout of hard play in the blacks’ 25 Miss Amadio shot across to Miss McKelvie who beat the blacks’ goalie with a strong drive and Feilding was in the lead by two goals to one. Play rested in midfield for a while until Miss Waterworth worked up to Miss McKelvie who carried the rush along with a good dribble to notch her second goal. Immediately following the bully off Mies Dewe secured the ball and evading tho opposition again centred to Miss McKelvie who made no mistake with her shot. Spasmodic play by Oroua followed, but thej could not get through the defence and the game ended with tho scores reading; Feilding 4, Oroua 1. Messrs J. Herdman and R. Stewart refereed. Tho teams wero entertained at afternoori tea later, when Mr J. E. Barltrop, president of the Feilding Hockey Association, congratulated both teams on their display. On behalf of Oroua Mr Stwart briefly replied. PERSONAL. Mr H. Furness, who has severed his connection with a local drapery firm after eight years service, was presented by his fellow members of the staff with a camera as a token of their esteem.

Mr H. E, Thurston, of Feilding, has been appointed working manager of the Cheltenham Dairy Company’s pig farm out of G 6 applicants for the position. Lieutenant A. H. Sugden, N.Z.S.C., Adjutant of the 4th Cadet Battalion, is on leave in Feilding prior to leaving for India on exchange.
