RESULT OF AUCKLAND RAID. EVERYTHING ADMITTED. AUCKLAND, April 24. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday afftemoon to deal with William Alfred Mackay, George Jelicich, and William John Rushton, who were arrested in three simultaneous raids at noon on that .day in bookmaking raids. Mackay pleaded guilty to the charge of having. carried on the business of a bookmaker. Jelicich admitted that he used premises at 77 Victoria Street, as a common gaming house, while Rushton pleaded, guilty to using his premises, at 57 Albeit Street, as a commdfi gaming house. “These three men are bookmakers, said Detective Cummings, who prosecuted. “Mackay carries on at Newton where he has a very nice; little corner, but he does hot come into town, and carries on his business as honestly as he can. As_for Jelicich, he has carried on extensively at his shop in Victoria Street, and had in his possession when arrested over £3OO. -Rushton has a big motor business, but he also has this other big business. He, too, had a large sum on him when arrested, but he stated this was the proceeds of the sale of motor cars. In, fact, while the search was on-to-day a man came in to buy a car. He bought it, too. Neither of these men gave us any trouble and told no' Ties. They frankly admitted everything. Mackay is a returned and suffers from nerves. He safs he cannot do much hard work. This makes thirteen convictions this year for this class of offence,” concluded the chief detective. “Well, they will each be fined £75, in default three months’ imprisonment,” said Mr F. Iv. HuAt, S.M. “I don’t suppose they will want' time to pay. Do they?” “They are all financially strong, sir,” said Mr Cummings. However, after conferring with the trio, Mr Cummings said that they would like until Tuesday to pay. “Time to adjust matters, sir.”
