RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”)

Acceptances for first day events at the Manawatu meeting to be held on the 28th and 30th close to-night at 9 o’clock.

It. J. Mackie, who sustained slight concussion when Festina Lente fell in the Nelson Handicap at Ellerslie, was not seriously inoonvenienoed hf 7 the mishap and will be in the saddle at Avondale prior to coming south for the Awapuni meeting.

An unusual combination of the numeral five was demonstrated at Feilding the second day. Merry Day, who was fifth on the card tor the Easter Handicap, ranking fifth favourite with 555 tickets invested on her chances.

A similar set of cirmustances was forthcoming in the Kawa Kawa Hurdles the first day Anchor( the winner) being sixth in the ' book and ranked sixth favourite, while Kalakaua was third in order of the card and went out third favourite.

Banjuke made an appearance at Feilding the second day and while he looked a picture he quite failed to see out the journey and it is evident that the gelding is not going to prove a stayer.

The introduction of the Oroua Cup at the Feilding Easter meeting was made possible by the sporting spirit of Mr J. Jackman, who is a member of the Feilding Borough staff and, with the addition of £350 in stake money by the club, a most attractive event was presented. That it proved attractive to owners was evidenced by the fact that all 19 acceptors went out to contest the event.

Starter W. C. Price had some fractious fields to handle at Feilding, but he came through with colours flying. Some considerable delay was entailed in getting the field in the Oroua Cup under way, and the fact that the horses were starting on their mission directly in front of the stands probably had its effect on the excitable members. There was a tendency to crowd outwards and quite a few had their chances ruined early thereby.

A second or two before the Oroua Hack .Cup field was sent away on its mission at Feilding a figure was observed crossing the immediate front of the lined up candidates. When the tapes flew up he was still a few yards short of the railings and for a moment it appeared as though he would bo struck by the charging horses, but ho escaped by the proverbial skin of his teeth. “The incident did not assist the already-inconvenienced outer members, one or two of the boys pulling infield across the front of their neighbours in order to avoid the man.

Awapuni turned cut two winners at Feilding and in both instances they

had tl e full support of the public. Merry Damon was entrusted with over a quarter of the total investment aoney in the Easter Handicap, while Catcall carried a shade undor a quarter of the money in the Awahuri Had: Handicap.

A fe iture of the holiday racing was the fa lling away in totalisator business i i every part of the Dominion. The S mthland fixture at the seaside resort of Riverton emerged with the best, c- mparative returns and possibly that ] ortion of the Dominion is less affected by the present depression than 1 ae north.

Danaris and Lady Desmond are stated to have both run below form at Ellerslie, and very possibly it was the course that upset them. Certainly the undulations would be all agai is; Damaris, who should race better at Awapuni.

Tie lease of Nigger Minstrel to Mr <T. Lu i ha 3 about terminated, and it is p>e ible that the young horse will be ia! en over by another studmaster.

J. ] town will have Orazone and Silver) line at Awapuni, and these horses will not he raced at the Avondale f xture.

Rui ne , Star Stranger, Joy King and I icoy Bird left Auckland on Sunday i ight for Hawke’s Bay. It is under tood that some of them were intended to race at Ellerslie on Easter Mocd iy, but the acceptances were missed. Awapuni next week will see them in action.

W. Rayner sent Damaris and Thaw home bo Wanganui after they raced at Elle*s;io on Monday, and The Thorn and ( ovent Garden will represent Mr G. .Vf. Currie at the Avondale meeting. Thaw and Damaris are booked for Awapuni next week.

Previous to winning the first division of the Nelson Handicap at Ellerslie, Orazone had not been tried at a greater distance than six furlongs, and those who backed.him down to a short price were taking her on trust at a mile. She pulled through in great stylo, however, and, moreover, came from the middle of the field to win, outstaying the opposition.

Civility earned £2IOO at Ellerslie by .her dual success. The Elysian marj was in rare buckle, and a credit to her trainer, F. Lind. Her win on ’Monday was brimful of merit, for there were a number of really smart spri.ii ;rs engaged and the way she ran p ist them in the run-in stamped her a, a really high-class mare.

Shirley’s time for the Great Easter Hardicap, 1.24 3-5, is a record for the race, idle previous best being 1.25 1-5, by Arrowsmith in 1920 and by Grand Knight last year. The New Zealand record for the distance, 1.24, was made by Finora, just over two years ago, in the Craven Plate, run over the samj distance.

F x n a time point of view Eulalie registered a noteworthy performance in wi ining the Champagne Stakes at Ricca ton. She covered the distance in 1.1 ), which is not only an easy recorc. or the race, the previous best being 1.12 by Right and Left in 1920, but if is the fastest time ever done by a two year-old in New Zealand or Australia replacing the 1.10 1-5 put up by The Hawk when he won the Pacific Hand cap at Trentham six years ago.

Gre it Charter is a huge two-year-old, ns big as many old horses, comment!; a writer. He is a bay gelding by K ing John from En Parole, and has the gift of galloping. He’ drew No. 3 5 at the barrier at Ellerslie on Monday and began fairly well for his first ttempt. He ran a really good race, and with tho experience should take ill kinds of beating when next he : - a es. It is to be hoped that, like maty big horses, his wind does not becon e affected.

Pej away is one of the best handicap horse; produced in the Auckland Province in recent years, statev “Vedette ’ He was very bright at Ellerslie, aid a mass of condition. On the first ; ay he cantered away from Star StriiD|er, and even allowing for the fact hat he had 211 b the best of the weigh ts, it was an impressive perforini lice. He was unlucky on the seccn 1 day, meeting with all kinds of intc r erence. Pegaway will not be out c: place in future in the very best hand cap company.

A able message from England to Melh urne states that a large shipment of live stock was despatched for Au.‘.t alia by the steamer Suevic. Include l in the shipment are the five tho re lghbred horses Cottingham, Cyno , Stephenovitch, Indiga and Willy Nilly. Cottingham, who is an aged horse, by Lemberg, won at his only Jiree starts last season, the value of the stakes being £1142. Cynos is an a ;ed horse, by Argos, the ‘sire of Diom ides, one of the fastest sprinters seen n England in recent years. Cynos had tine starts this season, but was place l only twice. Sheplienovitqh is a fivi -year-old gelding by Stefan the .Grea , and last season he had only one tart. Indigo is also a gelding. He it by Friar Marcus, and last year he si irted nine times and was placed only ince.

The locally owned Piuthair has a great record in big handicaps this seano i, having won the Pearce Handicap, Metropolitan Handicap, the Egmoiit Taranaki and Wanganui Cups, and. the Great Autumn Handicap. He:- next start will be at Awapuni, when she will contest the Gold Cup.

Ra lier has not shown .the form latth that won him the Wellington Cup. He did run a fair race in the Gre a Autumn Handicap, however, finish .ng fast from a fair way back, but,. comments a scribe, on his form he is not likely to make the trip to Aw a] uni.

11l form of Centrepiece is simply sta;sf Jring in its inconsistency, states “The Watcher.” One day he runs like duffer and the next time out he wir s like a racehorse. There would apt a to be some peculiarity in his mak< up to account for his poor showings on the first day of a meeting, bui he regularity with which he reverst i that running oil the next day is n illy remarkable. When he return- d to the birdcage after winning the ’empleton Handicap on Tuesday he nade a determined attempt to sava; e the horse ridden by the clerk of the :ourse, and this temperament preb bly has a good deal to do with his ] ace running. The fact remains thet the best has still to be seen of Cent epiece. -
