DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING.

(From Our Own Correspondent),

The monthly meeting of the Foxton District High School was presided over by Mr F. Woods. All Saints’ Vestry wrote Mr. F. Woods. All Saints’ Vestry articles connected with the science class and asking for their removal from the schoolroom. —The matter has been attended to by the headmaster. , Tho Education Board wrote in reference to the occupation of the old school residence and the converting of same into temporary class rooms for cooking and scienoe.—lt was reported that occupancy would be given up this week and that tho board would carry out tho necessary alterations immediately. It was resolved to pay the travelling expenses of the school team which competed at Sanson and those who compete at Levin; also the expenses of J. Hirini, tho youthful swimmer. The headmaster reported that tho roll numbers of the various departments were as follow ;—Primary 418, secondary . 38, sido school 44, a total of 500. The percentages of attendances for the quarter had been: Primary 89, secondary 90, sido school 91. The low percentage had been due to an abnormal amount of sickness, together with wet weather. Mr. I. Woods, in thanking members for their co-operation during the year, stated that he would not seek re-election to the committee this year. Eulogistic references were made to Mr. Woods’ sendees by members of the committee, and he was accorded a vote of appreciation.

NECESSITY FOR SWIMMING BATHS.

The following return asked for by the Director of Education indicates the necessity for public swimming baths locally: Number of pupils in the standard classes of the Foxton school who can swim : Standard 1., boys 1, girlS 0; Standard 11., boys 0, girls 0; Standard 111., boys 1, girla 0; Standard IV., boys 5, girls 5: Standard V., boys 3, girls 2; Standard VI. boys 3, girls 2. Out of a roll numbor of 306 in these classes only 22 children can swim.

In the secondary department, the return reads as follows:—Junior, boys 4, girls 1; senior, boys 9, girls 0. That is, out of a roll number of 38 only 14 pupils can swim.

Mr. D. McEwen, of Foxton, met with painful injuries to his face and head through being knotted down by a car in Palmerston North. His injuries will incapacitate him from work for a few days. The Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perroau) and Mrs. Perrcau have returned from a motoring tour in the Aucklnnd province. Mr. and'Mrs. F. T. Redman, of Napier, paid a brief visit to Foxton last week. Mr. Rodman is a member of the literary staff of the Hawke’s Bay Herald. Mr. R. O. Homblow has returned from the North Auckland provinco where he spent an enjoyable holiday. The local branch of the Plunket Society tendered a farewell tea to Mrs-. AustinJohinston, a past president, and made her tho recipient of a token of goodwill in the form of a crystal and silver toilet article. At a committee meeting of the Foxton Football Club correspondence was received from tho Berhamporo Club, Wellington, regarding a match at Wellington on Easter Saturday. It was resolved to inform Bcrhampore that the team would leave Foxton on Good Friday amd. return on Easter Monday. A letter was received from Western United (Pclmerston North) stating that it was hoped to arrange a friendly match at a later date. Matches wero arranged as follow:—Shannon thirds and Club thirds on Easter Saturday at Foxton and Shannon juniors v. Club juniors at Foxton on April 9. The vital statistics for Foxton during March with the figures for tho corresponding month of last year, in parenthesis, wero as follow: —Births, 4 (6); Maori 1 (nil) : marriages 2 (1): marriages by the registrar 2 (nil); deaths 1 (1); Maori, nil (1). Figures for the March quarter with tho corresponding one for last year in parenthesis wero: —Births, 13 (14): Maori, 1 (nil); marriages, 3 (1); marriages by registrar, 2 (nil); deaths, 8 (4); Maori, 1 (1). The quarterly returns in connection with the local S.M. Court show that there were seven sittings; plaints entered totalled 30: judgment summonses is6u©d, 15; warrants of committal, 3; criminal cases, 24 (23 males and ano female). During tho month of March the total rainfall registered was 3.38 inches. There wero seven wet days and two inches were recorded on tho 19tli.

At tho local District High School „lhis week' two footballs were presented to tho school, one by Mr. James Coley and the other .by the Awahou Football Club. The boys wero briefly addressed by Mr. J. K. Homblow on behalf of Mr. James Coley, and by Messrs. F. Robinscin and F. Woods on behalf of tho Awahou Football Club.
