TOKOMARU.

Mrs. Webb, who has been visiting the South Island, is to. return home on Friday. She will be accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Dowla. ■ i .

The hoalth of Mrs. C. Stevenson, who is in the South Island, is causing her relartivcs and friends grave anxiety. Miss Ellen Wilton is visiting relatives in Hawke’s Bay. , ' Mr. Alec McNaughton, who resided here many years ago, has recently been a visitor to the district.

Miss MoKenzie, of the school staff, intends spending her Easter holidays at Taumarunui.

Mrs Morgan is at present an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital. On Sunday next, at St. Aidan’s Church, a confirmation service will be conducted by His Lordship the Bishop of Wellington, when six boys and fivo girls will be confirmed. The candidates are Aileen Schwass, Mavis Schwass, Maud Davey, Betty Davey, Dorothy Webb, Margaret Webb, Eric Cant, Sydney Free, Fred. Boote, Spenser Hopping and A. Hopping. Mr and Mrs Roy Wilton have taken up their residence in Otaki. Mr and Mrs A. Drake and son have left on a motor tour up north. Mr C. C. H. Palmer, formerly on tho school staff here, has been appointed solo chargo teacher at Akitio.

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, there being present: His Worship tho Mayor (Mr E. Butt) and Crs. Thwaites, Downce, Richardson, Spencer, Hook, Richards and Hyde.

CORRESPONDENCE

From the Kairanga County Council asking for heavy traffic fees for the quarter ending 31 March.—Forwarded.

From the Ilorowhenua Rugby .Disrtict Council accepting the council’s terms for the use of the Domain and also thanking the council for the sympathetic consideration given to tho matter. It was hoped that the interest in football in Shannon would be 6uch as to benefit the borough and its people.—Received. From the Shannon Football Club asking that the grass be cut on tho Domain and also that the cricket pitch be returfed by next Saturday.—The town clerk reported that he had written twice to the Cricket Club asking that the. pitch bo returfed The council resolved to do the work and charge the Cricket Club with the cost.

From the Local Government Loans Board advising that the Local Government Loans Board Act came into operation on April Ist. Under the provisions of tho Act every local authority which proposed to borrow any moneys must submit an application to the IxDard for sanction .to borrow. Any local authority intending' to apply for sanction must first advertiso its intention to consider, at a certain date, a motion to apply for sanction of the loan. The advertisement must at the same timo call for any objections to be lodged with the local authority for consideration with the motion.—Received.

From the postmaster calling attention to the state of the Post Office fence, due to the tar spray in use by the council employees, and requesting that tho matter by given attention. —It was resolved that the fence be put in order. From Mr J. T. Bovis forwarding plan of his property in Stout, and Whittaker streets, which has been subdivided, for the council’s approval.— Approved.

•From Mr J' Linklater, M.P., with reference to the local bodies’ proposed deputation to the Minister in charge of main highways asking for a subsidy towards the construction of main highways through boroughs of 5000 population and under. The writer, said be understood that Parliament would meet in Juno and ho would advise the doputationists to postpone the deputation until then, as all tho members interested iVi this question would th|e\n be in Wellington and he would then have no difficulty in getting together quite a formidable deputation to wait on the Minister. The council could be assured of his support and assistance in this important and necessary movement. —The town clerk reported that to date 46 repli es had been received supporting any action that might bo necessary to attain the desired legislation. Tho council resolved that a lettpr lie sent to all the local bodies concerned forwarding them the contents of Mr Linklater’s letter, and suggesting that it would be inadvisable to bold the proposed deputation until Parliament mot; also that the various local bodies appoint the member for their district to represent them on the deputation in conjunction with any other delegates ..Which they care to send; tho names of tho members to bo forwarded to Mr Linklater who will then take the matter up with the members of Parliament, tho local bodies to be advised of any further development.

GOLF CLUB

Tho annual meeting of the Golf Club was held in the Council Chambers on Friday evening when Mr Blackwood (president) presided over a fair attendance of members. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £l2 18s 6d with £6 in outstanding subscriptions still to come in. In moving its adoption, Mr Johnson said that the club was to he congratulated on the satisfactory position. He questioned whether there was another club in New Zealand which had been compelled to form six new links over a period of six years, and it spoke volumes for the members that they had held together so well under such conditions.

The president reported: The past season has not been so successful as previous seasons mainly owing to the fact that a numbor of players have loft the district, and only a few new ones came in their place. Neither were the links such a success as had been anticipated though the very wet winter experienced was mostly the reason for that. During the year medal matches were keenly contested and won by different players on nearly every game. The thanks of the club are due to Messrs Ilennessy and O’Driscoll, the successive proprietors of tho links, and to the groundsman (Mr R. Hayes) who did such valuable work during the season. The committee who worked so hard and tho ladies wlio all so willingly took their turn in providing aftornoon teas in all weathers, are also to be heartily thanked. The election of officers resulted : President. Mr Blackwood (re-elected); • vioepresident, Mr A. Saxon; lion, secretary, Mr A. Morgan (re-elected); committee, Messrs. B. Spencer. J. Gagliardi F. Invitations were received to the Levin and Foxton clubs’ opening days on April 6t-h and 9th respectively. The secretary reported that negotiations had been entered into to secure a course on the properties of Messrs Stern Bros and IT. and C. Easton at Buckley,' about two miles from Shannon. The course seemed a most suitable one. tho ground being dry, while,links of any length coulcj. bo laid out. Two rinks from lho Terraco End Bowling Club visited Shannon on Saturday. Out of four games pla.yi?d each club won two, but Shannon won on the aggregate points. A'rink from Ekelahuna Hooper. Sliinin, llornblow, Gooding (skip) played here on Saturday against 11. Butt, A. 'I. White, W. 11. Gunning, J. Gagliardi (skip) for the Manson and Barr Cup, Shannon retaining the cup Uy. 19 to 13, after an evenly contested game. Next Saturday a rink from W : oodville will play here. The local green was closed for play for tho

season from last Saturday with the exception .of ono rink which is being kept open for Manson and Barr Cup matches. A return football match between Shannon and Hui Mai was played in tho Domain on Saturday. After a fairly fast game, which was'controlled by Mr Sands, Shannon were the victors by 20 to 6. Next Saturday the local senior will meet Western United (Palmerston North) in Shannon. The tar boiler and sprayer recently purchased by the council are being used in repairing tho footpaths in the borough. They are a great improvement on the old method.

A very successful street stall was conducted by Ven. Bcde’6 Ladies’ Guild on Saturday and competitions were won as follow: Cushion, Mr. T. C. Thwaites: cake (51bs lljozs). Messrs L. Merwood and C. Hook (51b i2ozs)); doll (Elizabeth), Mrs T. G. Wilson (Christchurch),„ man’s shirt, Mr J. H. Roberts; ladies’ outfit, Miss F. Camp; pair of bantams, Mr T. Watterston.

A well attended committee meeting of the Women’s Institute was held on Monday evening when matters in connection with tho movement in Shannon wero discussed.

Mrs C. Spiers is at present holiday making in Nolson.
