GREAT BOTANIST.

PROFESSOR LAWSON DEAD

BRIEF ILLNESS

SYDNEY, March 27,

After a brief illness Professor A. Anstruther Lawson, Professor of Botany* at Sydney University, died in a private hospital at 3.30 yesterday afternoon. He was admitted only on the day before, and his death followed an operation. The passing of Professor Lawson, at the age of 65 years, i 6 deemed a great loss to the scientific world. His research and discoveries in Australian flora have from time to time created world-wide discussion. He was a passionate lover of the Australian bush, and his many writings upon Australian native plant seeds and his discovery of the origin of endemism in angiosperms attracted the attention of the world’s most eminent scientists.

Only a week ago a London cable announced that Professor Laivson had been selected for a fellowship by the Council of the Royal Society of London. He graduated D.Sc. at the Glasgow University, and came to Sydney in 1913 to open a school of botany. To-day his school at the University is regarded as one of the finest in' the world.

Last year the University of Adelaide conferred upon him the honorary degree of D.Sc. He was unmarried.
