BAKERS' DISPUTE.
ARBITRATION COURT HEARING

WELLINGTON, March 16
The Dominion bakers’ and pastrycooks’ dispute was heard in the Arbitration Court to-day. The points in dispute concerned hours and wages. The employees asked for a 44-hour week and the employers sought a 48hour week. The union also asked: that the hour of starting work for bakers and assistants > (except doughmakers) should not be earlier than 4 a.m., and that the hours of starting work for pastrycooks and their assistants should not be earlier than 6 a.m.
The following increases in the rates of pay were sought: —Foreman baker or pastrycook, £5 7s 6d to £7; journeyman, £4 17s 6d to £6; bakers’ labourers, £3 18s to £5. Two weeks’ annual holiday were sought in place of one.
The Court, after hearing evidence from both parties to the dispute, reserved its decision.
