SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH.
GREAT PROGRESS MADE. L - RUGBY, March 16. The annual report of the committee of the Privy Council for scientific and industrial research points out that the research departments of the fighting services, while mainly devoted to problems of national defence, influence favourably general industrial development and that the development of shipping, transport by road and air, and wireless communication owes much to them. The Medical Research Council receives a substantial annual grant and at no Erevious time have the problems of ealth been attacked by such scientific methods or with such promise of success. Agricultural research is promoted and stimulated by the Government for more than it was before the war. Large grants are given to universities to help to maintain scientific institutions and the Government has recently set up a committee of civil research in the constitution of the committee of Imperial defence to advise on broad questions of national policy’, involving scientific and economic research, and to co-ordinate the. work in which the different departments of State are concerned. V hen it is considered that national research organisations have also been set up in the principal Dominions it may be claimed that in a short space of years a quiet but none the less significant revolution has taken place.—British official wireless.
