HELEN WILLS’S PAY.
AMATEUR TENNIS IN U.S. A JOKE, i FOR HER NAME! LONDON, March 7. “American amateur lawn tennis is a joke,” says Vincent Richards, one of the players who turned professional and accompanied Suzanne Lenglen during her recent tour. “Take for example, the drawings done by Helen AVills, which are now being syndicated in America, and for which 6nq is paid 250 dollars (£SO) a week. v ' , “If she is paid for the drawings and not for her tennis name, then I am the world’s greatest tenor.” Miss Wills, who is at present in London, said that she got £2OO a page for her drawings lasi; year from some American magazines. Although the drawings are amateurish and "her articles do not display any great ability, they are her own work. Unlike the majority of the leading English amateurs, who are paid big prices for articles, Miss Wilis does not emplby literary hacks, or “ghosts,” as they are called.
