TANGIMOANA

CELEBRATING NEW YEAR. [From Our Own Correspondent.] On Saturday evening, Mr Hern again came to light -with a sports programme for the resident children, and at 6.30 p.m. tho fun commenced, there being races for the children of all ages and, in addition, there were lolly scrambles and other interesting events. Tho young ladies, young men, and even tho older folk, were not forgotten, there being plenty of fun and frolic for all. The evening concluded with community singing and the National Anthem, led by Mr L. H. Yarrall, of Rongotea. Several members of the Feilding Highland Bagpipe Band were present, at tho beach on Sunday and favoured the gathering with quito a numbor of selections. It is pleasing to see that no stione is being left unturned in an endeavour to entertain the public through the medium of athletic ' sports, dances, etc. Both of the above mentioned functions were favoured with eminent success. Speaking to the newly-appointed secretary (Mr A. J. Hern) of the improvement committee, your correspondent was informed that, at the next sports meeting, he hopes to have cycling, boating and swimming races, in addition bo the programme of New Year’s Day. Holiday-makei's have been very fortunate during their stay at the beach as regards the weather, which has been exceptionally favourable for picnickers. A very successful dance was held in the tea-rooms on Friday evening, there being some 40 couples on the floor, which was in excellent dancing order. The room was very nicely decorated with various bright coloured streamers radiating from tho centre. Excellent music was supplied by Messrs A. Johnston and A. Bentley. The oxtras were supplied by the gramophone. Tho duties of M.C. were capably carried out by Mr A. McLean. Although tho night was not altogether suitable for dancing, it being particularly warm, the function was carried on until ai late hour..

MEETING OF IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE. A general meeting of tho improvement committee was held in the tea-rooms on Saturday evening, Mr H. H. Hunt being in the chair. Before proceeding with the general business, tho chairman congratulated Mr A. J. Hprn, the organiser of the sports meeting, which had been held that day, on the capable manner in which the sports had been concluded, and said that it was a pleasure to be associated with him. Mr Hern was accorded a hearty vote of thanks (carried with acclamation). Mr Hern, in reply, said that he was very pleased to know that his efforts had been appreciated, .and that the success of the sports meeting were largely due to the spontaneous way in which the local sports committee had assisted him. He considered that there wats a very bright future for Tangimoana. Tho climatio conditions were ideal, and, owing to its geographical position and the easy moans of access, he felt sure that Tangimoana would eventually be one of the leading seaside resorts. By looking into tho mirror of history one would find that a few years ago there wore very few houses in this locality, but to-day one would find the place was going ahead by leaps and bounds, and he felt safe in saying that the population in the very near futuro would exceed one thousand people. Apparently tho advantages of the district wore already well known, there being over 600 car loads of picnickers in the Tangimoana Square on New Year’s Day. Mr Hern submitted a report and balance sheet of tho sports meeting. The chairman then proceeded with the goneral business and mentioned that, owing to pressure of other affairs, he would bo unablo to offer himself for re-election. Mr Hunt said that, although he would bo unablo to take an active interest on the improvement committee, he had still the interests of Tangimoana at heart and would at all times bo willing to do his part towards the betterment of the township. On rising Mr Gray, senr., said that ft was with feelings of ploasuro and regret that he would ask tho meeting to accept Mr Hunt’s resignation. Ho knew exactly the position in which Mr Hunt found himself placed. Mr Hunt was not a young man, and it was time that he took a littlo well-earned rest, and he was pleased that Mr Hunt was able to do so. It was to be regretted, however, that, in accepting the resignation of Mr Hunt, the improvement committee would lose an energetic worker. The secretary (Mr Stringer) then tendered his resignation owing to business reasons. He said he would still do his utmost to assist the committee in any way. 'there were many expressions of regret at losing Mr Stringer. Tho election of officers resulted as follows: Chairman Mr L. 11. Yarrall; secretary, Mr A. J. Hern; assistant-secre-tary, Mr Fuller; executive committee, Messrs Aisop, Gray, junr. and Marston •’ general committeo, Messrs Gray senr Olds, Coleman, Northcote Howard’ Aisop’ Street, Edwards, Marston, Cox, Mason! e JUn n’ 1< ul,or > stringer, Carrock and Small; sports committee, Messrs Howard, Coleman, Olds, Stringer and Mansell.
