TRYING EXPERIENCE.
MOUNTAINEER INJURED. CARRIED LONG DISTANCE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 3. A young mountaineer, Roger Chester, of Watson’s road, Papanui, met with an accident on Thursday which, though not serious, meant a very, trying experience. He with a companion, Ivan Tucker, joined a party that set out to climb Mount Rolleston, but the top being hidden with mist it was decided to make towards Harman Pass.
At the height of 300 feet Chester was traversing a shingle face and, starting to slide was crushed between two largo stones, a piece of the flesh of the calf of one leg being torn away. First aid was rendered by one of the party and then the slow journey back was started. The river had to be crossed five times in the twentymile return to the old West Coast road. Here they fortunately met a motorist who conveyed them to Arthur’s Pass and the wound was treated by a medical man. Chester is making good progress.
