TRAGEDY IN ZOO.

BEAR KILLS COMPANION. v JEALOUSY~THE CAUSE. [By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.] AUCKLAND, Dec. 30. A tragedy, believed to be the outcome of a fit of jealously, occurred at the Auckland Zoo to-day, when one of the big brown Russiah bears killed a small female of the same species. Some of the spectators in the large crowd around the bear pit in the afternoon who threw offerings of buns, fruit and nuts to the bears showed a preference for the small bear. The larger animal apparently resented this, and attacked his companion with such ferocity that she eventually succumbed. The small bear, which was about 18 months old, arrived with a consignment of animals from London and had been in the zoo only about a month.
