LOSS BY FIRE.

LAUNCH DESTROYED. AUCKLAND, Dec. 30. The motor launch Gladys Grey, owned by Mr L. E. Smith, of Church street, Onehunga, was burnt to the water’s edge in the Manukau Harbour: Mr Smith and his brother Oliver had been fishing near Cornwallis, about 12 miles from Onehunga. Mr Smith went forward on the deck and Oliver started the engine, when it appeared to backfire into the carburettor and the flames ignited the benzine in the tank. A patent fire extinguisher was used, but proved ineffective, and in a few minutes the launch was enveloped in flames. Mr 0. Smith was badly burnt. The owner of the Gladys Grey lost a good suit of clothes and 30s in cash, besides other articles of value. The launch was insured for £l2O.
