“IN BAD ODOUR.”
NEW SOUTH WALES AS BORROWER. LONDON, Dec. 21. Sir Mark Sheldon said to-day that ho did not think any fresh New South Wales loan would be floated here unless its terms were much more favourable to investors than were those of the last issue. “Inquiries since my arrival,” said Sir Mark, “confirm my views of the past three years regarding the general question of Australian borrowing.” City authorities say that a large amount of the last New South Wales loan is still unsold, and that there is not the slightest demand for it, owing to the State being in bad odour with investors on account of the persistent over-borrowing. Any new loan must be issued at about ,94 to attract attention. The proposed New York loan is indifferently received in the city but a more (x/refial attitude is manifested towards other States.
