TIMBER FOR FIREWOOD.
LARGE QUANTITIES WASTED. RAILWAY FREIGHTS BLAMED. RAETIHI, Julv 23. At a meeting of the Raetilii Chamber of Commerce the matter of railway freights on firewood was discussed. It was stated that the high cost of railway freights had crippled tho firewood industry in the district. If cheaper freights could be obtained it would not only help to put the industry on its feet, but at the same time help to provide a great deal of work in the locality, where an enormous quantity of timber suitable for firewood was going to waste. One speaker said the cost of sending a truckload of firewood to Wellington was £4 17s. This price was considered unreasonable, and the consequence was that no firewood was being sent away. By disposing of the wood more land would be brought into productivity. The chairman considered that an enormous waste was occurring of a commodity that would bo of great benefit to town dwellers, especially ’those far removed from bush areas. It was decided to refer the matter to the Minister of Railways and to seek the support of other local bodies.
