FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the local branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last evening, when Rev. M. A. Rugby Pratt presided over a good attendance of members. Several apologies for absence were received. Advice was received from tho Wellington branch of the society to the effect that it was prepared to subsidise tho Palmerston North branch to tho extent of £IOO per annum. It was decided to appoint a deputation to attend a meeting of the Feilding branch on July 2. The town clerk, Palmerston North, wrote advising- that a free pass on the borough buses had been granted to the society’s inspector. Subscriptions paid in were from Mrs (Dr) Wilson, £5 os, and Miss L. Munro, 10s 6d. Instructions were given for recoipts to be issued to all contributors. With a view to preparing for a canvass for new members, the secretary was requested to provide all members of the committee with a list of the present members of the branch. The inspector was given authority to collect and receive subscriptions anc? donations. Mr M. H. Oram reported that thq incorporation of the society was being proceeded with, and it was decided that the financial year end on May 31, and that subscriptions date from June 1.
It was decided to have a telephone installed at the residence of the' inspector, Mr W. J. T. Floyd, 34 Albert street, and Mr H. B. Free was given authority to purchase a bicycle for the inspector. It was reported that the latter’s uniform was almost ready. After discussion on the matter of permanent office accommodation for the branch, Mr C. F. Spooner was instructed to report on suitable buildings. The chairman undertook to apply to the Railway Department for a free pass on the railways for the inspector, the area to touch Levin, Foxton, Bunnythorpe and AA r oodvillo stations. A report on his meeting with the AVellington society was presented by the chairman.
Instructions were given for tho procuring of a suitable book for tho permanent preservation of tho record of the transactions of the society, such record to dato from the inaugural meeting. In his fortnightly report, the inspector recorded attention to an injured dog, and the destruction with the humane killer.of a horse injured in the street. Two poultry sales, a horse sale and a cattle sale had been attended, and everything was found in order.. — The meeting expressed gratification at tho inspector’s activities and the method in which the records were kept.
