Described as a tea merchant, resident in Palmerston North, John Henry Frith, 29 years of age, appeared before Messrs A. J. Graham and G. H. Espiner, J.P.’s. at the Police Court this morning, charged with defaulting for 14 days in payment of moneys payable under an order made at Napier for tho maintenance of his son, an inmato of the Hamilton Receiving Home, thero being in arrears up to December 28 tho sum of £23 us. On the application of Senior-Sergeant O’Grady, accused was remanded to appear at Napier to-morrow morning. A postal official of Hamilton, Charles Joseph Hugh Curry, pleaded guilty before Mr Wvvorn Wilson) S.M., at Hamilton yesterday to nine charges of theft of moneys belonging to the Government. The sums aggregated £BO 14/6. Detective-Sergeant Sweeney said that when interviewed Curry made a full confession. Some of the sums stolen were land arid income tax payments. Accused put down tho thefts to over-indulgence in drink, and said that he had arranged to make res>titution of the misappropriated moneys out of his superannuation. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence.
