Messrs Barber and Wlietton’s garage at Petone was almost totally destroyed. by fire yesterday afternoon. A newly-equipped motor bus and a seven-seater sedan taxi, together with a large number of fittings, were damaged beyond repair. Yesterday morning rour leather bags full of silver were found in a right-of-way at Dunedin. It was ascertained subsequently that the money had been stolen from the premises of Mr David Livingstone, who controls several side shows at the exhibition and also an auctioneer’s business in Princess street. The opinion was expressed by members at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council that the width of the new bridge at Shannon should be 20 feet, particularly as vehicles coming from either side would be required to negotiate a sharp rise on to the structure. It was also desirable that heavily laden lorries bo able to pass without inconvenience. Later in the meeting, when in telephonic communication with the chairman of the Highways Board, the county chairman was informed that the road line at the bridge had been surveyed and it was anticipated that the work would bo gone on with in the near future; further, that the maximum width of bridges erected by the Public Works Department--was 18 feet. In view of this it was not considered advisable to press for an additional two feet in width. The homo of to-day is not complete if it has not a China cabinet, with at least one piece of really choico 'China in it; high-class China is always welcomed, and it gives an atmosphere of refinement to the home.
