AMAZING FRAUD.
VENETIAN’S CRIME,
LIFE OF LUXURY.
ADMISSION OF THEFTS.
ROME, April 3. An amazing revenue has been discolsed owing to Mantuzzi, the chief collector of taxes in Venice, giving himself up to the police on a charge of stealing 14,000,000 lire. Twelve years ago Mantuzzi was earning 40s per week, but ho began gambling in the State lotteries, in which he said he won a prize of 1,000,000 lire. He purchased a beautiful villa and lived a life of luxury. Mantuzzi has been embezzling extensively by means of the inheritance tax. According to the law, legatees -are not always obliged to pay the entire tax immediately, but can pay it in instalments. When Mantuzzi received the full amount from legatees he onlv entered a fraction in his books, picketed the difference, and used it to purchase tickets in lotteries.
The Government now finds that overmuch latitude has been allowed to high revenue officials, whose accounts after this will be rigorously inspected apd subjected to strict Fascist control.— Reuter.
