NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. . Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, April 2. The twenty-third annual championship under the auspices of the New Zealand Draughts Association opened this morning when the Major (Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P.), made the first move. Twentj’-four entries were received, but the present champion, D. Calderwood (Hamilton) had not entered. At the end of the first round' the results were:— Brown (Christchurch) and Murdock (Toiro) plaj'ed two drawn games; llentill (Dunedin) scored 1 from Moore (Dunedin) ; W\H. Templeton (Nasebv) scored 11 from Longstaff (New Plymouth) ; Lucas (Dunedin) scored 11 from Petersen (Dunedin) ; Hutchins (Invercargill) played two drawn games with Norris (Invercargill) ; Sutherland (Invercargill), scored two wins from O’Neill (Waitati) ; Gibbard (Dannevirke) scored :two wins from Scott (Mossburn) ; Botting (Dunedin) scored 11 from Tibbes (Dunedin) ; Davis (Stratford) scored 11 from Ellis (Mosgiel) ; L. Morris (Palmerston) scored j 1 from Henry (Invercargill; Harwell (Blenheim) scored 2 wins from G. S. Templeton (Blenheim) ; W. MacKinnon, a bye.
